It seems like the way people wear jewelry hasn’t changed that much since the beginning of time, but that doesn’t stop people from trying to invent new accessory trends. People have tried wearing words on their ears, Kendall Jenner has taken to wearing a giant hoop in her nose, and Dolce & Gabbana have tried to make racist earrings look sexy on several occasions. Now there’s an even newer look that’s been spotted cropping up on Instagram, and it’s trying to be the perfect hybrid between jewelry and tattoos. They’re called Flash Tattoos… and they’re kind of awesome.
They’re basically like temporary tattoos that add bling to your body. (Writing that reminds me of spraying my chest with glitter in the middle school locker room, but these seem more chic than that, at least.) If you’re still confused, Refinery 29 sums them up pretty nicely:
The Flash Tats last for four to six days and truly look like two-dimensional pieces of jewelry. It’s an ideal compromise for those who want to wear jewelry to the beach but don’t want to lose or ruin it. Plus, it looks so chic, especially when combined with real jewelry.
I’m actually really into this idea. Every time I consider getting something pierced or getting a tattoo, I chicken out for fear of regretting it later. Flash Tattoos look like a good way to test a look out before committing to it full-time– the same way hair chalk can give you a test run for dye.
There’s one pretty big drawback, though, as Refinery 29 points out: you can’t wear sunscreen on the area you’ve tatted since it ruins the adhesive. That’s going to be a deal-breaker for a lot of people who care about their skin. Who knows, though– maybe this trend will hit big for indoor parties.
